QSFP+ and QSFP28 Selection Notes

QSFP+ and QSFP28 explained for switch uplinks, plus one listed part shown by model name only.

This page has two parts: general notes on QSFP+ and QSFP28 ports for switch uplinks, and one listed part, the QSFP-40G-SR4-S, supplied by Hui Tong as original, brand-new equipment. The listing gives the model name only. It does not state a form factor, speed, lane count, reach, fibre type or connector, and the model name is not evidence of any of them, so confirm each against the exact part number before ordering. No other part is listed for this page; for any other part number, confirm availability per exact part number before quoting.

QSFP+ and QSFP28 (general background, not a description of the listed part)

QSFP is a form-factor family rather than a single speed. QSFP+ is the 40G generation; QSFP28 is the 100G generation and shares the same physical size, but runs faster lanes. Because the two look alike, a module must match the port rating of the host switch. QSFP ports can also be split with breakout cabling — a 40G port fanned out to four 10G links, for example — where the switch platform supports it.

This page is written for distributors, system integrators and IT procurement teams specifying optics against a known switch bill of materials, from single spares to project quantities.

Switch context: the EX4600-40F-AFO switch listed on this site has 4x 100G QSFP28 uplink ports. Those are switch ports, not a listed module; no 100G QSFP28 module is currently listed on this site. If your design needs 100G optics, send the exact part numbers and confirm availability per part before quoting.

Selection Notes

When specifying a module for a QSFP port, check three things against the switch data sheet: the port speed (40G QSFP+ or 100G QSFP28), the reach and fibre type required, and whether the port will run as a single link or with breakout cabling. Some QSFP28 ports also accept 40G QSFP+ modules, but this varies by platform and port profile, so verify against the host switch before ordering.

Before You Order

Confirm with the sales team, before ordering: the exact part number and its specification, availability, price, delivery time and the host switch model the module must work with. For the wider listed range, see optical and interface modules; for form-factor background, read the SFP vs SFP+ vs QSFP28 guide.
