Unmanaged Switches

No configuration, no management plane — unmanaged switches for simple, fixed edge connections.

Unmanaged Switches: What They Are and How to Specify One

An unmanaged switch adds ports to a network without configuration: power it on, connect the cables, and traffic flows. There is no configuration interface and no VLAN setup. Where a small office or a simple edge connection needs ports with no configuration at all, the unmanaged type is the one to specify. This page is a selection guide. No unmanaged switch model is currently listed on this site; confirm any unmanaged requirement per inquiry, against the exact part number or specification the buyer provides.

Where Unmanaged Switches Fit

Unmanaged switches provide fixed, plug-and-play connectivity where managed features are not required. Typical deployments include:

  • Small offices — adding desks, printers and shared devices without a network administrator.
  • Edge drops — extending a single uplink into several access ports at the edge of a larger network.
  • Simple camera runs — connecting small groups of IP cameras, using a PoE variant where the cameras take power from the cable.

Where a network needs VLAN segmentation, monitoring or per-port control, an unmanaged switch is the wrong tool; the managed vs unmanaged guide explains where the line falls.

Current Listing Status

None of the switches currently listed on this site is listed as an unmanaged switch. The table below shows the specification points a buyer should define for an unmanaged requirement, not catalogue models.

Specification point What to define Why it matters
Port count Number of access ports, plus any uplink ports Sizes the switch to the devices at the edge
Port speed Fast Ethernet, Gigabit or multi-gigabit Must match the devices and the uplink
PoE or non-PoE PoE standard and total power budget if required Cameras and access points may need power over the cable
